In 1974, while working at Sanrio Company, Yuko Shimizu designed the Hello Kitty character. At that time, the company wanted to create a new character that would appeal to young girls and stand out from other popular cartoon characters of the era.

Shimizu designed the simple, cute white cat without a mouth, originally named "Kitty White" and portrayed as a British schoolgirl from London. The character quickly gained popularity and became a global pop culture phenomenon.
